A sunny day provided perfect weather for a trip to the very pleasant town of Alcester for a guided tour by the chairman of the Alcester History Society on 23 April. Starting in what was originally the site of the Roman forum (now the Waitrose car park), we followed the town’s evolution through the ages demonstrated by the variety of buildings which had been constructed since then. A most interesting and attractive town, which is clearly well looked after. Then off to Coughton Court, a county house in the same family since the year dot, which has benefited from considerable recent restoration work, and has plenty of interest for all tastes but especially for those familiar with Tudor and Stuart history: priest holes, gunpowder plot etc. A great day out.
