SUMMARY:Friends of Malvern's Railway Group: Visit to the GWR Steam Museum and the preserved Swindon and Cricklade Railway
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Malvern’s Railway Group is arranging a visit to the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway and the preserved Swindon and Cricklade Railway on Sunday 29 September. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages courtesy of National Railway Museum \n\n\n\n\nBoth locations are in Swindon.  The Steam Museum contains a fine collection of Great Western Railway locomotives (including Caerphilly Castle) and rolling stock\, and tells the story of the railway works at Swindon.  We shall have lunch at the museum café.  The Swindon and Cricklade Railway is a section of the former Midland and South Western Junction Railway.  Trains are expected to be hauled by GWR tank locomotive 6695.  During the visit\, we hope to be given a tour of the railway’s workshops and their museum about the history of the line. \n\n\n\nTravel to Swindon will be by car.  David Gowan will be happy to provide details (e-mail  david.gowan@btinternet.com tel 01684 778129 or 0776 441 2730)\, and will co-ordinate car sharing. \n\n\n\nParticipants will purchase their own entry tickets individually on arrival at the museum and preserved railway.

DESCRIPTION:This is the event rescheduled from earlier in the year – now an “own transport” visit. \nA day with the Giffard family\, who have lived at Chillington Hall since the Middle Ages and whose ancestors are buried in Brewood Church. We will have a guided tour of the house and a trailer tour of the park and lake. SUMMARY:Local Visit: The Forthampton Estate\, Gloucestershire
DESCRIPTION:From the eleventh century onwards\, the village of Forthampton and its manor house were closely linked with Tewkesbury Abbey. Bought by Issac Maddox\, Bishop of Worcester\, in 1750\, whose only daughter\, Mary\, married the Revd James Yorke in 1762\, it has been in the Yorke family for 250 years. DESCRIPTION:We will visit the Cathedral Library to see its collection of ancient manuscripts\, followed\, with kind permission of the Vice Chancellor\, by a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the old Boardroom at the University\, where the British Medical Association was founded in 1832\, the Jenny Lind Chapel and the medical museum. During the tour\, Prof Richard Lewis will tell us about the history of medicine in Worcester over the centuries\, using the paintings and artifacts which we will see. \nNB: the Cathedral Library is accessed by a medieval staircase of forty-six steps\, and we are advised that it is not suitable for those with mobility issues\, a heart condition or severe asthma. \n\n\n\nOwn transport / car share or rail option (Foregate St is nearest station). \nLunch at own cost in Cathedral café.
