Chateau Impney was built in 1875 by the wealthy salt-magnate John Corbett for his wife who was part French and part Irish. They met in Paris and both loved French chateaux. John Corbett had one built near the town where his fortune had been made. Sadly, his grand gesture had little effect, as the marriage was not a happy one and his wife moved to another house in Wales. Chateau Impney has been a hotel since 1925.
