Malvern Civic Society: What we do

The Society has an active social and educative programme that aims to entertain and have interest for all of its members whether they wish to be directly involved in planning or not. It is not our aim to concentrate exclusively upon Malvern but rather to take a broad view of the region and beyond.

  • We hold monthly public meetings with speakers on a variety of subjects ranging from local/regional history to matters of cultural or environmental interest.

  • In addition we have coach trips with our own guides and local visits to places of historic or cultural interest.

  • We also have local guided walks in local towns and countryside that enable members to meet together and broaden their knowledge of the region.

  • For those of our members unable to attend our meetings we now send out a News Sheet in  May and in October to keep them up to date on Malvern News.

  • In the summer the Society’s own trained guides offer weekly town walks to visitors

  • The Society is represented on its own stand at the Malvern Spring Garden Show

  • Throughout the year our planning sub-committee regularly meets and keeps a watchful eye on all new planning applications and tries to ensure that over development does not occur and opposes proposals that are considered insensitive or inappropriate in relation to the existing building stock.

  • In furtherance of this aim the Society has an annual Award Scheme to promote good quality design in the Malvern area.

  • We are represented on High Street Malvern, a project set up in 2007 with the support of the Civic Trust, to develop the commercial health and well being of Malvern as a thriving business community by bringing together residents, traders and keen supporters of the town.

  • Our ‘Facelift’ Programme has been successful in encouraging and advising owners and leaseholders concerning redecoration of their shop frontages.

  • The Society is responsible for researching and implementing, with the support of the District Council, blue plaques to commemorate the historic associations of famous deceased persons who have lived in Malvern.

  • The Civic Trust's Open Weekend whereby significant public buildings are made open to the public has, in the recent past, been organised by the Society. In Malvern it has taken place in September.

  • We do offer our financial support to those causes that support Malvern. Current examples include our sponsorship of ‘Bands in the Park’, Malvern in Bloom and the ‘Autumn in Malvern Festival.’
